Amherst Wildlife Trapper Tip of the Month:
Best Way to Track Wild Animals

Tracking the wild animals requires you to interpret the signs of their presence such as the damages, trails, and tracks. These signs are necessary to tell the culprit on the destruction of your yard. Animal tracking is an important skill when you are planning to eliminate the wild animals within your premises. This skill is also necessary if you need to learn more things about the creature.

How to Identify the Animal

Some people will find it thrilling to find a print in the mud. This is an obvious sign that there is another creature that is dwelling within your property. Most animals have their own distinct print. In case you are aware on the things that you should observe, you can determine what type of animal is infesting your property. When you stumble upon a print, here are some of the factors that you need to notice.

  • Size-With the size of the print, you can determine immediately if you have a small or large animal in your area. It is relatively easy to differentiate the print of the cat, fox, and bear.
  • Toe Number- The number of toes will be revealed in the print. If it has five, you probably have weasel or skunk infestation. If it has four, cougars and bobcats may be the culprit.
  • Nail Print-Identification of the animal will be a lot easier if there is a nail print. Usually, felines will not show nail print while other creatures such as bears, and raccoons will have claw print.
  • Back and Front Print-Most creatures will have the same front and back print. However, in case there is a noticeable difference, this print may probably belong to a hare or rabbit.
Track Pattern

You need to identify the location of the print since there is a pattern behind this. The gait can be determined by observing the track pattern. Animals from different families will have unique gait. You will be able to know the direction that they are heading to.

  • Diagonal Pattern- Some animals that will have diagonal pattern include hoofed, canines, and felines.
  • Pacer-These are animals with stocky bodies such as beavers and bears.
  • Bounder-These are badgers, ferrets and weasels that usually hop.
  • Galloper- These are animals that gallop such as hares and rabbits. The front feet will land on the ground first when they gallop, and the back feet will end up at the side or at front.
Following the Animal

You should track the animal during the early morning or evening or at the late afternoon period. This is the time of the day when the tracks will be more visible that will make it easier. You may use a tracking stick that will help you identify the movement of the animal. You should also try to think like the animal that will enable you to understand their intention and predict the direction that they took.

By observing the tracks of the animals, you will be able to determine the pressure marks that they left. You can identify whether they have stopped, flew, climbed the tree, etc. You should also understand the things that resulted to this behavior.
